On May 24, 2011, Amazon activist José Cláudio Ribeiro da Silva and his wife Maria do Espírito Santo, known in Brazil as the forest-defender couple, were shot dead in an ambush by gunmen believed to be hired by local loggers in the State of Pará.
Zé Cláudio predicted his own murder several times, one in this chilling video six months before his death, during a TED talk in São Paulo.
Zé Claudio bravely denounced illegal logging in the Amazon, and his work caused the closing of ten logging companies. He mentions in the video Chico Mendes, the environment hero who was assassinated in the Amazon in 1988, and Dorothy Stang, an American-born Brazilian nun who was murdered in the Amazon in 2005 after devoting her life to the defense of the poor and the environment.
