CADÊNCIA, A NEW FILM DOC ON FOOTBALL AS AN ART FORM

The Good Blood is not a big fan of football, but man, do I ever love Sócrates, the coolest football player of my childhood, a fierce political activist and bohemian doctor who happened to be a genius –albeit a lazy one– with the ball.

And he features prominently in Daren Bartlett's new documentary, Cadência ("rhythm," in Portuguese), which premiered last night in London, along with an exhibition, all sponsored by Nike. From Hypebeast:
This summer sees Nike Sportswear commemorate the beautiful game with a series of events imbued with Brazilian culture. Nike has been synonymous with the Brazilian national football team since 1997 and this campaign celebrates the evolving iconic partnership. Premiered last night at Rich Mix was the preview screening of Cadência, the new Brazilian film by award winning documentary maker, Daren Bartlett. Cadência is a study of the unifying effects of Rio's sports and cultures through its people, passions and traditions, as it explores the country's rhythm. After the screening, the Cadência journey continued to Nike's 1948 space in East London. An installation by David Kennedy introduced the Brazilian experience, and an exhibition of Jiwon Park's original art stills provided an insight into her unique creative process. Stills from the documentary were showcased alongside an epic, large-scale video installation, which formed the dominant visual centre point.

"The real inspiration for Cadência was to be able to address aspects of Brazilian culture that I had come across after living in Rio for nearly three years. I feel that the generosity, attention and care the Brazilian people have shown me are reflected in the work I produce about their lives and their cultures." Daren Bartlett, March 2010.
