TOP TEN BRAZILIAN FILMS OF THE DECADE

The film critics at O Globo newspaper voted to choose the ten best Brazilian films of the decade. It was the decade that the so-called "Retomada," or rebirth of Brazilian cinema, established itself. So many of these titles are great, and if you're interested in alternative film (euphemism for non-Hollywood stuff), they're all a must-see. Here they are, with trailers, when I could locate the trailer:

1. "Cidade de Deus" (City of God), de Fernando Meirelles

2. "Edifício Master", de Eduardo Coutinho

Couldn't find the trailer,  if you know a link, put in the comments, please!

3. "Tropa de elite" (The Elite Squad), de José Padilha

4. "O invasor" (The Trespasser), de Beto Brant
Couldn't find the trailer,  if you know a link, put in the comments, please!

5. "Cinema, aspirinas e urubus" (Movies, Aspirin and Vultures), de Marcelo Gomes

6. "Estômago" (Estômago: A Gastronomic Story), de Marcos Jorge

7. "Serras da desordem" (The Hills of Disorder), de Andrea Tonacci

8. "O cheiro do ralo" (Drained), de Heitor Dhalia

9. "Lavoura arcaica" (To the Left of the Father), de Luiz Fernando Carvalho

10. "Ônibus 174" (Bus 174), de José Padilha

  1. To the Left of the Father really is a work of art. Edificio Master is great too but all docs by Eduardo Coutinho are great

  3. To The Left of Father may produced competently but the theme of the main character's lust for his sister Ana is DISGUSTING and a total turn-off. Basically, including something sickening, outrageous and vulgar is a type of cheap gimmick used by novel writers to get their mediocre work noticed, to get fame and notoriety, but the truth is, unless you're a member of the debauch and bored-with-life super-rich elite (a demented and unsophisticated group of people who want to acquire anything forbidden to them or not experienced by them even if that would involve scatophagia), you'll find the subject of a man's sexual lust for his sister to be nauseating, particularly when that character is treated in a sympathetic or heroic manner. I think some of Brazil's upperclass should really try to stop confusing European-Style (French, German or Scandanavian) cultural nihilism and obscenity with sophistication and art.

    1. FIlms about the absurd aspects of human nature are sometimes the most interesting and profound, despite the difficult subject matter. You do not have to be "super rich" or "elitist" to appreciate a film like To The Left Of Father; you merely have to be interested in something that isn't the stereotypical kind of movie. Cinema is about expression, even if what you need to express is disgusting. Vulgarity is not always a gimmick.

Also, for future reference, "lust" alone is not considered a theme. Lust would become a theme only when put to action. For example, the theme of lust destroying a man's life, or lust is a feeling that allows human beings to see themselves for who they really are.
